William Brattle HouseThe William Brattle house at 42 Brattle Street was built in 1727 for Major-General William Brattle, at the time the wealthiest man in the colony.
Due to an unfortunate misunderstanding involving the Powder House that still stands near Tufts University, Brattle, his family and many other of Cambridge’s Tory families were forced to flee the town following the Powder Alarm of 1774. Another illustrious Cantabrigian, journalist Margaret Fuller, lived in the house for a short time in the 1830s. Today 42 Brattle is home to the Cambridge Center for Adult Education. |
